QUICK WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS PERFORMANCE ESTIMATION BASED ON MACROSCOPIC AND MICROSCOPIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ACTIVATED SLUDGE

Microbiological studies of activated sludge require time, specialised staff and the ardous task of identifting and analysing the results, which is nousually within the scope of every laboratory. Thi poster raises the possibillitity of carrying out a simplified study of activated sludge, based an its macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, which produces a sludge index value that is directly related to the percentage reduction of solids in suspension , COD and BOD in the wastewater treatment plant. In addition, this sludge index would also provide the possibility of quickly obtaining a historical record of biological quality values using a simple protocol that could be used for comparisons.

Factor if a specilist controls a few small wastewater treatment plants, because as a consequence, cost are reduced.

The use of organims (bacteriia, protozoa, metazoan, ...) as indicators of effluent quality is a practical system of control.
